Description
"Yosemite Falls at Night"
Yosemite Falls, one of the world's tallest, is made up of three separate falls: Upper Yosemite Fall (1,430 feet), the middle Cascades (675 feet), and Lower Yosemite Fall (320 feet).
In this view from the valley floor, the upper and lower falls can be seen, but not the middle portion (cascades).
A rainbow of colors can be seen at the base of the upper fall if you look carefully.
Spectacular Yosemite Falls is the tallest waterfall in North America, plunging a jaw-dropping 2,425 feet - nearly a half-mile - from the top of the upper fall to the base of the lower fall. For me, to see and explore these amazing falls in person is not only a vision to be remembered forever, but a sublime sensory experience as well. There’s a (very strenuous) hiking trail alongside it that will take you all the way to the top, and you’ll often get thoroughly drenched with ice-cold spray in spring and early summer when the flow is at its peak. My favorite part is its roar; you’ll hear it throughout Yosemite Valley, and even inside your room at nearby Yosemite Valley Lodge should you be lucky enough - as I was - to stay there.
Source of the Falls:
Yosemite Creek, which flows over this waterfall, is fed entirely by snow melt. At its peak in late spring, 2,400 gallons per second can flow over the lip of the upper fall. Yosemite Falls usually runs dry by late summer.
