In a cold autumn rain near tree line, this subalpine spruce-fir forest provides a stunning contrast to the shimmering gold of aspen groves found just 1,500 feet lower in elevation.
The Rocky Mountains subalpine zone is the biotic zone immediately below tree line in the Rocky Mountains of North America. In Colorado, the subalpine zone occupies elevations from approximately 9,000 to 12,000 feet (2,700 to 3,700 m). It's characterized by a concentration of Englemann Spruce and Subalpine Fir, and generally excludes trees found more commonly at lower elevations such as Aspen, Ponderosa Pine, and Lodgepole Pine (adapted from Wikipedia).

Based in Colorado Springs, Colorado USA, I'm a nature and landscape photographer primarily focused on the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Working in both color and black and white, I use a variety of photographic techniques to capture the many moods of mountain landscapes, from intimate perspectives to grand vistas, in locations both iconic and seldom-visited. My goal is to produce images with vivid colors, high dynamic range, and compelling compositions. Longer lens focal lengths are preferred to bring the viewer closer into the scene, requiring every available pixel to help tell the story. Thank you for visiting the site. I hope you enjoy my work. I love this photo. Reminds me or walking through the deep forest. The mountains have many moods - not just views of the peaks. Where was this taken?
Eric Glaser replied:
Hi, Stephanie. Thanks for your comment. Sorry for the late reply. This photo was made in the Uncompahgre Wilderness Area in the San Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado. Thanks again!
