"Self-Portrait (1892)"
Artist: John Singer Sargent (American, 1856 - 1925)
Date: 1892
Medium: Oil on canvas
Dimensions: Height: 53.3 cm (20.9 in); Width: 43.2 cm (17 in)
Collection: National Academy of Design, NY USA
Inscriptions: Signature and date top: John S. Sargent / 1892
Sargent's diploma portrait is similar in conception to another, less finished self-portrait painted in 1886 (Aberdeen Art Gallery and Industrial Museum). In updating his likeness, however, the artist has amended the slender lines of his youthful figure to reflect the slight broadening of maturity. His grey-green eyes also exhibit a different, more probing regard. The portrait appears direct and quickly executed, with a brushy, feathery touch unlike the more forceful and typical stroke for which he is celebrated.

Based in Colorado Springs, Colorado USA, I'm a nature and landscape photographer primarily focused on the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Working in both color and black and white, I use a variety of photographic techniques to capture the many moods of mountain landscapes, from intimate perspectives to grand vistas, in locations both iconic and seldom-visited. My goal is to produce images with vivid colors, high dynamic range, and compelling compositions. Longer lens focal lengths are preferred to bring the viewer closer into the scene, requiring every available pixel to help tell the story. Thank you for visiting the site. I hope you enjoy my work. "The mountains are calling and I must go." -- John Muir
