Description
Of all my photographs, this is one of my favorites. I'm not sure why. Other than that the scene draws me in, has a kind of power whose source I cannot identify, it is, I think, quite unremarkable. Perhaps the fence posts leading the eye to that lone row of telephone poles is what moves me - those ubiquitous conductors of communication for a species that seems to talk so much, and understand so little. Or maybe it's the fields of fescue that have weathered countless seasons of change since time immemorial. Then again it might be those distant mountains, part of the Cimarron Range, in one of my favorite views in Colorado, whose classic skyline boasts features such as (from left to right) the jagged Cimarron Ridge, Chimney Rock, Courthouse Mountain, and Precipice Peak.
"Cimarron" means "wild" in Spanish. This is wild, primitive land. You can find this view right off Ouray County Road 10, just a mile or so from downtown Ridgway and the only stoplight in the county. When you first stand here and see this place, you will never forget it. Look at that sky. Beyond those mountains, soon the sun will rise for yet another day.
