Description
This image of a benevolent moon rising over part of the Cimarron Range was captured one evening during the early fall of 2009. Up ahead are the jagged spires of Cimarron Ridge. To the right of it stands the imposing sheer tower named Chimney Rock, which tops out at 11,781 feet. In the classic film "True Grit," these mountains served as the backdrop during John Wayne's (playing Rooster Cogburn) unforgettable horse-riding, half-drunken, two-fisted, Winchester-and-handgun-slinging-with-reins-in-his-teeth charge against four bad guys, of whom he makes quick work. In this image (no bad guys here), made some forty years after the film production wrapped up and the dust finally settled, the colors in the landscape were tinted by the incomparable red light from the sun's last rays. The advancing shadows of dusk, seen here in the lower left corner, ended this light show a minute later.
