Description
One of the crown jewels along the Glacier Gorge trail in Rocky Mountain National Park in the United States, and only one of 156 lakes in the park, Mills Lake may well be the most spectacular. The lake is named in honor of Enos Mills (1870-1914). Considered the father of Rocky Mountain National Park, he struggled for six years to educate the public and the US Congress of the importance of setting aside large land areas for the preservation of scenery and wildlife. He was also an author, photographer, nature guide, innkeeper, lecturer, and adventurer.
Surrounded by Longs Peak, the "Keyboard of the Winds," Chiefs Head, McHenrys Peak and Thatchtop Mountain, perhaps no other lake has a more amazing backdrop. This image was captured in June, on a glorious day for photography as the lake was completely ice-free, and there was a new dusting of snow on the high peaks from a storm the night before. I remember arriving at the lake that early morning in complete solitude - so far as I knew, no other human soul was there - and then standing transfixed by the scene as I struggled to take it all in. As I waited for the sun to rise above the mountains behind me, a chattering gray jay landed on the tree you see on the left. Even he could not disturb the profound stillness of the lake that morning, nor the perfect reflection that appeared before me.

This is such a fabulous composition and pays a fine tribute to Mills Lake and Enos Mills as well, Eric! I have read his books and visited the old cabin his granddaughter manages and it is fascinating/
