Description
Beautiful Hanging Lake is located in Glenwood Canyon in western Colorado, and is reached via a short but steep trail that ascends a thousand feet up to a small, bowl-like basin hanging precariously above the cliffs below. It is a hidden sanctuary, a kind of emerald Garden of Eden, a tiny paradise unlike any other in Colorado. This view looks north from the south side of the lake, and reveals an achingly beautiful scene that is as intimate as it is fragile. It includes Bridal Veil Falls, a silken double waterfall descending from the ledge above. In the tiny lake, there are more crystal-clear hues of blue, green, and aquamarine in the shallow water (full of fish!) than one can imagine, and a travertine (deposited limestone) shoreline that took tens of thousands of years to create. Even the felled tree logs seem to have been placed by a painter's hand. Completing the color palette that day was a lovely collection of pink asters growing in the near foreground.
