Description
I couldn't help but notice these trees while hiking one day. Claiming precisely the same spot in a national forest of nearly one million acres, it seemed the two souls could not have been more close, nor their fates more intertwined. Having been spurned and finally dumped by yet another lover only the day before, romance of any kind was far from my thoughts. I was sure I would never look at another woman again.
But there they were: a mature, full-figured aspen with a limber young pine, seemingly inseparable. Each bore its own sweet fragrance in a wood teeming with life. Unafraid, unashamed, they stood there in plain view. They had obviously been cohabitating for quite some time. The showy aspen looked elegant and refined with its satin white bark and golden-leafed splendor. Its vigorous young suitor, tenderly clutching the fallen leaves of its betrothed with clingy evergreen needles, strained skyward to meet in an arboreal embrace.
My eyes averted, now pining for love once more, I hurried past this private scene and didn't look back.
