Description
This autumn image of a full moon setting at sunrise was captured from Trail Ridge Road in Colorado's Rocky Mountain National Park. The photo was made precisely at sunrise, when for a few fleeting moments the sun's rays bathed the highest peaks an incomparable red.
Winding up and over the alpine tundra, Trail Ridge Road is the highest continuous paved road in the United States - it reaches a maximum elevation of 12,183 ft (3,713 m) - and provides wonderful views of the park and many miles beyond. It follows a path that the Ute and other Native American peoples used for thousands of years.
Mount Ida is located in the northwest part of the park overlooking the forbidding Never Summer Mountains. This remote summit can be reached from a hiking trail leading southeast from Milner Pass. Mostly above treeline, and running nearly right along the spine of the Continental Divide, you can feel like you're on top of the world.
